Breakthrough experiences – Van Gemert dyslexiemethode® (dyslexia method)
Following are the results E. Oetringer and his son achieved after following the van Gemert therapy®, now called the van Gemert Dyslexiemethode. This is an alternative therapy. Its main focus is on dyslexia, but it also has effects on other areas. The therapy addresses multiple inefficiencies related to vision.
1. The son's case - Dyslexia
| Year |
School type |
School ratings1 |
Comments |
| Until 2005 |
School for special education (due to dyslexia) |
(special rating system) |
A program to restart reading skills delivered inadequate results.
There was discussion about having him stay in the school another year. This would have meant a second year lost; the parents were opposed. It didn't happen.

December 2004 to July 2005: van Gemert therapy
|
| 2005/2006 |
Normal school
Small class for pupils with learning difficulties
|
Dutch2: 8
Average: 7
Lowest: 7
|
He read his first book.
Prior to school start: There was concern he would be unable to finish the school. Preparations were made to move him to a school for special education if his ratings were too low. This was a non-issue at the end of the year.
|
| 2006/2007 |
Normal school - normal class |
Dutch2: 6
Average: 7
Lowest: 6
|
It turned out he had missed many Dutch language (and other lessons) as he was at the school for special education. This has negative implications. |
| 2007 to 2009 |
Normal school - normal classes |
|
He moved on to the next levels. |
1 Full year; 10: highest score. 2 Native language
2. The son's case – Daily ADHD incidents/oppositional defiant symptoms
| Treatment |
Treatment Results |
Comments |
| Initial: Medication + behavioral treatment (per Super Nanny-TV series) + Reiki |
Behavioral treatment, together with Reiki, (an alternative ancient treatment) reduced the symptoms to manageable level.
Daily incidents remained (door slamming, highly emotional reactions, acting as driven by a motor).
Main remaining criteria was: he was unable to control his emotions and actions. Multiple times he was close and sometimes crossing the line into unmanageable territory.
|
Parents stopped medication early on due to possible side effects.
Professional help was stopped at the time when behavioral treatment reduced the symptoms to manageable level and there wasn't anything else that could be done.
Reiki helped when symptoms were at peak.
|
| Breakthrough: A "side-effect" of the van Gemert treatment |
April 14, 2010: No incident for 3½ years (after months of a rising dispute: one incident)
The child is now a very different and "normal" child. Any remaining symptoms aren't an issue and are part of his personality.
|
Given these results, he wore his glasses (a long-term need of the therapy) less. During the therapy, not wearing the glasses caused heavy symptoms/incidents to show up within a day or two. This didn't happen this time; however, occasional signs of being "driven by a motor," etc. showed up in June 2007 and disappeared shorty after he began wearing his glasses all day again.
Mid-2008 he stopped wearing the glasses.

3. The Founder's own case – Headaches, focusing, memory, concentration
| Condition |
Initial Treatment |
After van Gemert therapy |
| Weekly severe headaches – worsened at worrying speed |
Painkiller required each time – The meds worked, but heavier doses were needed as things worsened. |
Longest periods without medication needs: 9 and 5 months. |
| Eye-focusing problems (PC work) |
Normal glasses – ongoing ups and downs |
Gone |
| Memory and concentration problems |
None - was about to seek professional help |
Back to normal |
Further indicators of good to breakthrough treatment results for this therapy:
- Per A. van Gemert, 13,000 children and adults have been treated successfully in The Netherlands and Belgium. He claims to have treated more people with dyslexia in recent years than any other institution in The Netherlands.
- These days, the marketing approach for this treatment is word-of-mouth.
- Today, the treatment is done with supervision of an eye doctor.
- Independent scientific research is welcome by van Gemert.
- From E. Oetringer's interactions with A. van Gemert: He is somebody whose top priority it is to help those who suffer – No matter how strong the opposition and setbacks.
- A. van Gemert suffers from dyslexia himself. In contradiction to his clients, his dyslexia originates from an accident and is not treatable yet.
- There is an international scientific association, applying a subset of the techniques used by the van Gemert therapy: IVBV
In January 2009, dyslexia treatment costs were added to the health insurance packages in The Netherlands. There is cost compensation for accepted treatment but no compensation for the van Gemert therapy. As a result, the van Gemert clinics had to close. A restart is underway.
